Emily is back! 😍 Nach zehn Tagen auf dem Atlantik und einem kurzen Zwischenstopp in Liverpool konnte ich meinen Land Rover jetzt im Hamburger Hafen wieder in Empfang nehmen. Dank der professionellen Organisation von Torben König und seinem Team @caravanshippers lief der Rücktransport über den großen Teich absolut reibungslos ab. Ich werde ja oft gefragt, ob sich so eine Verschiffung überhaupt lohnt… Das hängt aus meiner Sicht vor allem von der geplanten Reisedauer ab. In meinem Fall (12 Monate in 🇨🇦 und 🇺🇸) absolut! Für die Verschiffungskosten von 6.000€ für die Strecke Hamburg-Halifax-Hamburg hätte ich vor Ort in Kanada allenfalls einen kleinen Campervan für vielleicht fünf bis sechs Wochen mieten können. 🛳️🚑🌊

Believe it or not - I caught a cod! 🙌🏻😁 Actually even a couple of them - and it’s been the first time in my life that I‘ve been fishing!!! 🎣 I suppose it’s been a lot of luck and of course the precious knowledge of my new friend Frank who took me out on the Atlantic. As he grew up on the southern coast of Newfoundland and started fishing in his early childhood he has such a deep connection to the sea. And knows where to find the best spots for fishing! I cannot thank Frank enough for teaching me. So happy to meet him in his days off - before he has to return for his work as a lighthouse keeper on a very small island. One of only just a few remote stations left where the Canadian Coast Guard is bringing their staff by helicopter! 🚁 Thank you so much, Frank, take care!

St. John‘s is not only famous for being covered

St. John‘s is not only famous for being covered in fog very often but also for its amazing colorful houses: the „jellybean houses“ as they are being called. There‘s a story explaining that people have used these bright colors for making it easier for the fishermen to find their way back home in fog. But as I found out this is just a nice myth. The real reason is that in the 1970s a local heritage group started renovating some of the old clapboard houses and painted them in bright colors. Which obviously inspired a lot of neighbors around them… 🙌🏻😎

It is also believed to have the highest concentration of lighthouses in North America? They have got more than 60! 🤩 But nowadays none of them is staffed, they are all automated. The West Point lighthouse is the only one in black and white - and probably the most photographed one on the island. In summer it offers visitors the opportunity to spend a night there.

„Do you sometimes also stay in hotels on your road trip?“, someone lately asked me. No, not at all. As I converted my Land Rover ambulance into a cozy campervan I always have my hotel room with me. 🤷🏻‍♂️😁 So I just have to find nice places to park my bed on wheels. Like this empty parking lot in a little municipal park on the shore of New Brunswick. Although the lighthouse is fake - what a beautiful place for the night, with clean restrooms. (A huge thank you for the recommendation to Barry, another traveller. 🙏🏻)

Waking up next to a lighthouse - probably there’s no better way to start into a new day! 😍 (Well, except for waking up IN a lighthouse of course…) It‘s already the second time I spend a night in my Land Rover right next to this beautiful lighthouse. Its height of 33m makes it the second tallest in eastern Canada. And look at its characteristic structure: It is built in a shape of eight concrete buttresses to support a slender central cylinder.💡

This wonderful fjord immediately reminded me of my Land Rover trip to northern Norway in the summer of 2022. But actually the „Fjord du Saguenay“ is located in the province of Québec here in eastern Canada. It is one of the southernmost fjords in the Northern Hemisphere and home to harbor seals, and blue, fin, minke and white beluga whales. Unfortunately I am not able to post photos of them because I didn’t see any… 🤷🏻‍♂️😁 But the blue beauty of this fjord was just breathtaking. 🤩
